Our Student Teacher Ms. Stefanto has been teaching our class about First Nation Creation Stories in Humanities. Students learned how the Beothuk First Nation carries on and passed stories through stones. We used acrylic paint to pass on major themes from the Beothuk Creation belief. Ask about the story and how the rock helped them remember.
In Social Studies we have been looking deeply into Canada and at our school we spend time with the Group of 7.
Ted Harrison's Style is very unique and ahead of his time and we explored some landscapes of Canada in his style. Enjoy our Creations! I sent home a Historical Novel Project and unfortunately got the due date wrong. April 1st is the day after Springbreak and it is not fair on anyone to spend a vacation getting ready for a project.
The new due date will be April 10th. Each student has received a Historical Fiction Novel about an event in Canadian History. Students will read the Novel, write about the Novel, Research the historical event in the Novel and then present both parts to the class. Along side the presentation student will create one Artifact and one art piece that is connected to Novel and historic Event. Please see the handout for more information. Students should create a schedule to help themselves stay organized and so that they don't leave the project, research or artifact until the last minute. If parents can help students create this document it is a great learning opportunity to create a project plan and reasonable expectations. If students need help with their plan. I can help them create one, just let me know. If anyone is having difficulties with research, ideas for artifacts please let me know and I can help them at lunch hour. I went through and chose each Novel for each student individually and if they are too difficult please let me know. This projects is normally the highlight for a lot of my former students. We explored the concept of a 'whole' in relation to factions and decimals.
We began with assigning a valid to to one manipuative and students needed to find out what the other values would be. One Hexagon = Two Trapezoids= 3 Rhombuses= 6 triangles If we said One Hexagon was $1 student knew that two trapezoids fit into one hexagon. So the value of one trapezoid was 1/2 of a$1 or $0.50. We then extended our understanding to assign different values. If one triangle is worth $0.25 what would a Rhombus be worth? Two triangle fit inside a Rhombus so it would be would the value of one triangle or $0.50 We created shape are and then assigned a value to one shape and found out the value of a art pieces with our original assigned values Have a look at our creations and our understandings |
