Switch up what students are reading- online newspapers, picture books, comic books, fiction and non- fiction books. Keep it fun and try to challenge reading levels twice a week. Here is a list of verbal and written comprehension tasks you can use if you choose. -Before Winter Break I will send home a different Novel with each student for our Historical Book Project that all students will present to the class. It is a great opportunity to learn how to plan using a calendar and set self-made goals and deadlines while working through an independent project. Here is the rough idea of the assignment -any questions please let me know Mr. H Challenging Students to think differently when they make mistakes.
Our first art project of the year was to make something from a mistake. We read and discussed the book "Beautiful Oops" and talked about how mistakes are encouraged and expected in our classroom. Mistakes helped us "workout" our brain muscles, Students received a paper and I placed a random mark on the page and they had to make something from it. Each student was challenged to colour using pencil crayons using different techniques that would strengthen their artwork. I worked with each student to develop their ability to use their pencil crayons in a creative and unique way. Once the artwork was finished we wrote about how we though about mistakes in the past and some goals for the future. Enjoy! Mr.H . One of my favorite games to help students understand the power of place value and problem solving is called the game of 10 000
Here is how you play You will need a set of playing cards with the 10s and face cards removed. Each ace counts as 1. The goal in each round is to make two 4-digit numbers whose sum (+) is as close to 10 000 as possible. How to play: Ø Shuffle the cards. Ø The dealer deals 8 cards to each player. Ø Each player uses his or her cards to make two 4-digit numbers. Ø Each player finds the sum of his or her numbers, then the difference between 10 000 and that sum. Ø The difference between 10 000 and the sum is the players score for the round I also play with 4 cards and you have to get to 100 and six cards to get to 1000 Let us know how it goes Also if you don't have cards try a number generator to get your digits or even dice Mr. H A fresh new start!
Welcome to a new school year in a brand new school. This blog will be regularly updated for events and happening in our classroom community. There is also various education links that students can explore. Looking forward to meeting you all Mr. Hennigan Grade 5 Teacher [email protected] Hello Students and Parents,
Each day students need to have a water bottle to hydrate themselves throughout the day. Milk and other juices are welcome in the lunchroom, however in the classroom for the sake of our learning materials, we ask that only water be brought into the classroom. Additionally, students are allowed to eat healthy snacks in our class, unlike many other classrooms at Willow Park. As a teacher I can promote healthy eating and lunches at our school, but ultimately it is up to student and parents to make choices about their lunch. For the sake of our community, please respect our peanut-free environment. For classroom snacks, I ask that ONLY healthy snacks be eaten in the classroom. |
